3rd Quarter is up and running

Keep practicing Xtra Math.  Those that are practicing on a regular basis will continue to have an easier time with math.

Spelling continues to get harder.  This week we will be focusing on ar and or.  Hard stuff!

Don't miss Science Night on January 31st! The students loved this event last year. They are needing donations of gumdrops and toothpicks for this event.

February 4th is the 100th day of school.  Your student is encouraged to dress like a 100 year old! :) Ideas came home last Wednesday!

We will soon have a new security system on the main door.  You will have to be buzzed in. The system will help to improve building security and will be an important part of our ongoing effort to increase student and staff security.  The project is part of a district-wide initiative to improve safety and security measures in all buildings.  As you probably know, our school has only one visitor entrance.  The southwest door, near the corner of Khyl and Bench, will be equipped with a keypad/camera system, which will allow our school staff to control access at this entrance.  As always, a photo ID will be required when picking students up before our regularly scheduled dismissal time.  This new system does not eliminate that standard procedure.  Our school has always been a safe place for teaching and learning, and these measures will be taken to increase that level of safety and security.  While we expect there may be some inconvenience, we ask that you be patient and understanding while we all learn and adjust to this new system.

Have a great week!

Back In Full Swing

We have had a great start to our first full week of school since the holiday break. The kids seem rested and ready to learn. Beware though, I have heard that icky flu bug is going around.

We are lucky to have a new student in our class! Her name is Akaiah. Welcome!

We started new reading groups and a new unit in our new Lead 21 reading series. It is about communities. We have talked about places and people in the community.

In math, we continue to practice all the skills we have learned up to this point. We have been practicing words problems with 2 and 3 addends. We will be starting to count by 10's and count items by 10's. Keep practicing extra math, fluency and speed are tested on our 8 minute AIMS math test. I see some of the kids are making a lot of progress. Keep up the great work!

Remember:

*Homework (review) comes home on Wednesday-bring back anytime before next Wednesday

*Spelling test on Friday-study!

*Book bags returned when book has been read-preferably at least 3 books a week

*Xtra Math- try to do everyday

*Library on Friday- We had a lot of kids forget their books-Please return them!

Have a great rest of the week!

Happy New Year! Hope you all have a great 2014!

It is going to be nice having a two day week. We will be working on rules and procedures, just trying to get back into the routine. Then we will be back at full speed for a full week. I will be starting assessments in reading and math this week. Make sure those little darlings get their sleep and are at school on time. It is very hard on your child when they are not here on time. I have already given instructions and started reading groups by 8:35.

Do you have left over scraps of wrapping paper? If they can be cut into 6"x 6" or 8"x 8" squares, I would love to have them. I will do the cutting, just send the scraps. I am also looking for used Christmas cards. We will be using the front of them for a labeling project. Thanks!

We will be practicing our high-frequency words for spelling this week. Next week we will start spelling tests again.

I hope you all had a restful break and some good times with your child.

Wishing you well,
Mrs. Martin
